1944 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1944-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong Class VI extra thickness covers the date, above all the lower 9, with extra thickness also on LIBERTY and, to a lesser degree, on IGWT. The lower 9 also has a Class II separation line. Obverse markers: a gouge right of LIBERTY's Y, low; a gouge below the O of GOD; a short WSW-to-ENE gouge in the field right of the bowtie; and a scratch heading SW from the top of the date's 1 to the vest. Reverse markers: a short WSW-to-ENE gouge between the upper O and N of ONE, and a scratch heading WSW from the upper first S of STATES. Bill Wilson submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-VI and Coppercoins as 1944S-1DO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
