Description

Seventh in the obverse doubled die census for the 1944-S Lincoln wheat cent, DDO-007 presents strong southward spread on Lincoln's eyelid — a visually compelling diagnostic on Victor David Brenner's portrait where the delicate eyelid contour serves as one of the most sensitive indicators of hub doubling on the entire obverse. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-1651 and DMR-019, with three documented die stages: Stage A where both obverse and reverse surfaces show early-to-mid die state characteristics (EMDS), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both surfaces have reached late die state (LDS confirmed). The confirmation of both EDS/EMDS and LDS stages means collectors can find this variety in relatively fresh condition (Stage A) as well as on specimens showing advanced die wear (Stage C), providing a documented progression of how the die deteriorated through its service life. San Francisco struck approximately 282.76 million cents in 1944, wartime production on the standard copper alloy composition that returned after the 1943 steel cent experiment. The comments note that the mintmark is MMS-005 (straight serifs), indicating a specific mintmark style classification within the VarietyVista system — the straight serif S mintmark provides an additional confirmation point beyond the doubled eyelid itself. Strong southward spread places the secondary eyelid impression below the primary, creating a distinctly doubled or thickened eyelid line that is visible under 10-15x magnification.
