1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1944 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent, struck on shell-case brass planchets — the copper-zinc alloy recovered from spent military ammunition casings that replaced the controversial 1943 steel composition. Philadelphia's enormous 1944 output of over 1.43 billion cents was the highest single-year cent production at that facility in the Wheat Cent era, generating extreme die consumption and ample opportunity for hubbing misalignment. The Wexler Team documented WDDO-002 under Variety ID: 1944 1¢ WDDO-002. As only the second DDO for this date in the Wexler catalog, it likely represents a more significant or more readily detectable doubling event than the numerous higher-numbered varieties cataloged for neighboring years. No supplementary die markers have been published, and no cross-references to CONECA or other attribution systems exist in current records.
