Description

Twenty-sixth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1944 1¢ WDDO-026 with no other known cross-references. The 1944 Philadelphia cent, struck on recycled shell casing brass during World War II, had an enormous mintage of approximately 1.44 billion pieces — the highest of any Wheat Cent date — which required an extraordinary number of working dies throughout the year. That volume of die production inevitably generated a significant number of hub misalignment events, and twenty-six documented DDOs confirm the statistical reality that a small but consistent fraction of dies will exhibit doubling. Wartime production pressures may have contributed to slightly relaxed quality control standards, allowing marginally misaligned dies to enter service rather than being rejected during inspection.
