Description

Bearing the high catalog number WDDO-023 — evidence of extensive die study for the 1944 date — this Wexler Team attribution documents an extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid on the 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent. Unlike the 1943-S WDDO-010's triple hubbing with two extra eyelids, this 1944 variety shows a single extra eyelid from standard doubled hub impressions. A distinctive obverse die marker aids attribution: a die gouge appearing as a raised dot between the upper portion of the 9 and the first 4 in the date. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. The 1944 cent marked the return to bronze composition — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams — after the 1943 emergency steel cent year. This Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mintmark.
