1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020

Description

1944 WDDO-020 is a doubled die obverse on the 1944 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Doubling shows on the ear, at its bottom left. Obverse markers: a strong die dent between the bust's bottom edge and the rim, just right of the designer's initials; a weak WNW-to-ESE scratch low through GOD's OD; a short scratch heading NNW from LIBERTY's T at its top right; and circular lathe marks parallel to the rim, easiest to see above IN GOD WE and below the bust. Reverse markers: two roughly parallel WSW-to-ENE scratches through the left wheat stem, and a short SW-to-NE scratch above the P of PLURIBUS. Robert J. Piazza submitted the variety. Crawford lists it as CDDO-002 and Coppercoins as 1944P-1DO-016. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
