1944 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-767 and DMR-039 in the VarietyVista system, the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel DDR-001 exhibits medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM with light extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, this nickel was produced during the 1942-1945 period when standard nickel composition was replaced to conserve strategic metals for World War II. Die stage progression documents three stages: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B reaches mid-die-state with a die gouge in the center of the second U of UNUM and the obverse also at MDS. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The die gouge in the second U of UNUM at Stage B provides the most useful diagnostic marker for sorting specimens of this wartime variety.
