1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDO-003, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid on Lincoln's portrait — a displacement visible under moderate magnification that makes this variety a productive cherrypicking target. The obverse die carries several confirming markers: two very close parallel die scratches run north from the upper left T in LIBERTY, a strong north-to-south die scratch crosses the field above the R in LIBERTY, and a die scratch curves from the lower left 9 in the date. The reverse carries no noted markers. The 1944-D had a Denver Mint production of approximately 430.6 million coins — the largest single-year mintage for a D-mint Wheat Cent — reflecting wartime coinage demand.
