1944 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler team as 1944-D WDDO-001 and by VarietyVista as DDO-001, this doubled die obverse appears on a 1944-D Lincoln wheat cent. Both give the Cherrypickers number FS-101, which Wexler writes FS-01-1944D-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes very strong Class VI extra thickness on the date and on the letters of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Its obverse markers are a gouge to the right of the eyebrow and a clash line running from under the chin to the bowtie; no reverse markers were noted. Frank Baumann submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-VI and Coppercoins as 1944D-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting Natalie Halpern with the report, describes extreme extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, and notes that the mintmark sits higher than on DDO-007. Under its marker codes UVC-1619 and DMR-022, stage A (early) and stage B (middle) are unconfirmed. Stage C has a light crack running northeast from behind the ear, with both sides in a late die state, and in stage D the crack is stronger and reaches the top of the head below WE, with both sides very late.
