1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits very strong Class VI hub doubling with spread toward center on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1944 composition is shell-case copper alloy — recycled brass recovered from spent World War II shell casings — giving these cents a subtly different color and metallurgical character from standard prewar bronze. Struck at the Denver Mint during peak wartime production, the high sequence number WDDO-026 reflects the prolific variety output from this date. The obverse die carries extensive markers: short die gouges extend west from the upper T and R in TRUST, a die gouge runs southeast from the rim between WE and TRUST, a short die scratch angles southwest from the lower right of the first 4 in the date, a light horizontal die scratch crosses above the 1, and a circular die scratch traces along the rim around the entire obverse. The reverse shows a die chip appearing as a small lump on the lower T in CENT. Class VI extra thickness doubling on this die is strong enough to be visible without high magnification, making it one of the more dramatic DDOs among the 26 cataloged for the date.
