1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020

Description

Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date and LIBERTY on this 1944 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent, with lesser extra thickness on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-references: CONECA 7-O-VI; Wexler Variety ID: 1944-D 1¢ WDDO-020. Obverse die markers: two short diagonal die scratches running northwest to southeast over the O of GOD. Class VI doubling produces extra thickness rather than a separated secondary image, and on WDDO-020 the strengthening on LIBERTY and the date distinguishes it from the numerous Class IV spread varieties in the 1944-D census. The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent returned to the standard 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition after the anomalous 1943 zinc-coated steel cents were withdrawn; the D-mint 1944 cent was struck in large quantities at Denver as wartime cent production ramped back up with copper planchets.
