1944 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

1944-D WDDO-019 is a doubled die obverse on the 1944-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. An extremely close spread shows on the E of WE and the 44 of the date. Obverse Stage A: north-south scratches above the beard, southwest of the mouth; a small crack in the hair above the ear; and a concentric scratch at the rim below the bust. On Obverse Stage B a large chip sits on the 1 of the date; the hair crack is much longer and sends a branch downward over the back of the ear; the north-south scratches by the mouth are worn; the concentric scratch under the bust can no longer be seen; a gouge appears above the B of LIBERTY on its left side; and a large crack crosses the lapel and runs NW into the shoulder. Reverse Stage A: a crack on the lower T of CENT, a gouge SE of the S in PLURIBUS, and a gouge inside CENT's N on its right side. Reverse Stage B comes from a new reverse die, with circular scratches through ONE CENT. John A. Wexler submitted both stages. Coppercoins lists it as 1944D-1DO-005.
