1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-016

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-1641 and DMR-047, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-016 displays medium spread south on the eyelid of Lincoln's portrait — a downward hub displacement that shifted the secondary impression of the eyelid detail below its primary position, creating visible separation in one of the most finely detailed areas of Victor David Brenner's portrait design. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state identified by a very light die crack from the head to the R of TRUST and a die gouge above the P of PLURIBUS — this stage captures the die at the beginning of its service when surface degradation was minimal; Stage B shows the die in mid-die-state with a light die crack on the forehead and the reverse in MDS; and Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The eyelid area is a diagnostically valuable location for doubled die detection because the fine parallel lines of the eyelid and lashes provide natural reference markers against which even slight displacement becomes visible under magnification. The 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint during World War II in the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1944-D had an enormous mintage reflecting wartime production demands, and the return to bronze composition after the 1943 steel cent year makes 1944 an important transition date in the series. The progressive die crack development from Stage A's light crack at the head through Stage B's forehead crack documents the mechanical stress patterns in this die, with cracks propagating through the highest-relief areas of Lincoln's portrait where striking forces concentrate.
