1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Eleventh in the doubled die obverse sequence for 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cents, DDO-011 presents medium spread in the southward direction on Lincoln's eyelid. The eyelid is among the most sensitive diagnostic zones on the Lincoln Cent obverse, and medium spread to the south creates a clearly visible secondary lid impression below the normal eyelid — a displacement direction that effectively "lowers" the apparent eye opening on affected specimens. Three die stages document this die's production arc under catalog codes UVC-1636 and DMR-041. Stage A places both the obverse and reverse in early die state, confirming the eyelid doubling was present from the very first coins struck from this die. Stage B confirms both sides in mid-die state, extending the documented production window. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The deep DMR number (041) reflects the enormous volume of working dies required for the 1944-D Denver Mint cent, produced during the height of World War II when cent demand surged. This wartime production context generated dozens of cataloged die varieties across all three operating mints. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDO-011 rewards focused examination of Lincoln's eyelid area where the southward-displaced secondary impression adds a discernible second lid curve below the primary.
