1944 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006 / DDO-006

Description

DDO-006, which Wexler also numbers WDDO-006, is a doubled die obverse on the 1944-D Lincoln wheat cent with extreme extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Wexler lists CONECA 6-O-VI and Coppercoins 1944D-1DO-007; VarietyVista gives no cross-reference. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the doubling a strong Class VI extra thickness on LIBERTY's letters, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Billy G. Crawford submitted stage A and Frank Baumann stage B. In obverse stage A, one crack starts above the ear at the lower back of the head and heads ENE into the forehead; another crosses the forehead WNW, starting at the top of the nose's bridge; and a clash line reaches from beneath the chin to the bowtie. In obverse stage B the hair crack has become much heavier and bends NE in the forehead, continuing to the rim through the right side of the first T in TRUST. The reverse shows a crack through the lower right wheat kernels in stage A, and in stage B a large chip at the bottom of the T in CENT. VarietyVista credits Frank Baumann and calls the extra thickness extreme on LIBERTY, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. It follows the die under its marker codes UVC-1624 and DMR-027 through four stages. Stage A (early die state) and stage B (middle) are unconfirmed. Stage C, a late die state, has a light crack on the forehead and a light crack in the grains at the lower right of the wheat. Stage D, very late, shows a medium crack from the forehead to the eyebrow, a medium crack running through the hair up to the first T of TRUST, a die break on the top of the C of CENT, and a die break on the lower stem of the T in CENT.
