1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Following the westward RPM-002, the 1943-S Mercury Dime RPM-003 documents a northward S/S repunching — the secondary S displaced above the primary. The shift from west to north between consecutive entries underscores the random nature of hand-punching errors: each working die was an independent event, and the direction of misalignment was governed by the setter's hand position at the moment of impact. Northward displacement may appear as a thickened top serif, extra metal above the upper curve, or a faint S outline above the primary letter. As the third RPM for the 1943-S, this variety helps round out a small but significant San Francisco census for the wartime date. The San Francisco Mint's dime production contributed to the enormous volume of silver coinage circulating through the wartime economy — soldiers' pay, defense workers' wages, and everyday commerce demanded steady small-denomination supplies. Weinman's design remained one of America's most artistically accomplished circulating coins, its classical obverse and fasces reverse linking to Roman civic ideals. Struck in 90% silver at 2.50 grams on a 17.9mm planchet. Focus above the S for the northward secondary.
