1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017

Description

1943-S WDDO-017 is a doubled die obverse on the 1943-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling takes the form of several extra eyelids below the normal eyelid and one above it. Obverse markers: gouges along the east sides of the I and N of IN, looking almost like hub doubling; a crack leaving the head toward the northwest and reaching the O of GOD on its west side; a crack heading ENE from the rim to a point under the L of LIBERTY; a crack that leaves the rim heading northwest, crossing the east side of the bust's base and continuing through the jacket; a NNE crack from the rim across the base of the bust, just right of the D of VDB; and cracks that spread from the center of the head in three directions: northwest toward the top of the head, southwest toward the ear, and ESE toward the eye. Reverse markers: a crack heading northwest from the O of ONE to the rim, passing between the P and L of PLURIBUS; a southwest-running crack from the rim into the right wheat ear, low; a crack running northwest from the rim, crossing the wheat ear low and going on to reach the A of AMERICA at its top; and a northwest crack linking CENT's E with the O of ONE, with a die chip at each end.
