1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1943-S 1-cent WDDO-008, this steel Lincoln cent doubled die variety displays three extra eyelids below the normal eyelid, a distinctive diagnostic that makes attribution straightforward under magnification. The obverse carries several confirming die markers: a short, strong die scratch running west-southwest from the back of the neck, a die gouge appearing as a dot well north of the 9 in the date, and a die scratch running from southwest to northeast below the 43. On the reverse, a short die scratch extends east from the bottom of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, another scratch runs east-northeast from the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS, and a scratch passes from northwest to southeast through the second dot. Additional reverse markers include a scratch running west-northwest to east-southeast above the letters OF and another from southwest to northeast between the C and A in AMERICA. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The tripled eyelid effect places this among the more visually dramatic doubled dies in the wartime steel cent series.
