1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001 on the 1943-S Lincoln wheat cent, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse that VarietyVista calls a 1943/1942 overdate. Both catalogs give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (19.5), which Wexler writes FS-01-1943S-101 (019.5). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties says the die is at least tripled: a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot at about 9:00 shows on the date, the bowtie, lips, nose, eye and upper front curl of hair, with doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and close tripling on LIBERTY. Obverse stage A has six long south-to-north scratches above the 94 of the date and two parallel SSE scratches from the base of the R in LIBERTY; stage B adds a north-south scratch right of the Y and a scratch running north from the top of the 4. The stage A reverse has no noted markers; reverse stage B has a gouge (dot) inside the D of UNITED and several SSE scratches that start at the base of the N in CENT and cross the ER of AMERICA and the ST of STATES. Ron Howard submitted stage A and Brian Allen stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-IV, Crawford as CDDO-001, and Coppercoins as 1943S-1DO-001. Wexler adds that David Lindahl first reported it and that it appeared on pages 75 and 76 of the team's 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die as 1943-S one-cent 1-O-III. VarietyVista credits David Lindahl with the report and describes strong spread on the date, bowtie, profile and eye and on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Under UVC-1599 and DMR-010, stage A has both sides early, and stage B has an early obverse with an early-state crack from the lower right wheat to the rim. Under UVC-1600 and DMR-011, stage C has north-south scratches above the date in a middle state, a southeast crack on the lapel, and a changed reverse die in an early state. Stage D has a late-middle obverse and a crack from the first U of PLURIBUS to the O of ONE in an early-middle state, and a late stage E is unconfirmed.
