1943-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Another dual variety in the wartime silver nickel series, DDR-001 of the 1943-S Jefferson Nickel pairs with DDO-003 on the obverse, giving collectors two doubled die attributions on a single coin. The reverse shows medium spread on UNUM and OF AMERICA, with the doubling increasing in intensity from left to right — a progressive pattern indicating pivot-point hub misalignment during die preparation. San Francisco's 104.1 million nickel production in 1943 was the facility's highest output for the wartime silver composition, reflecting the enormous demand for five-cent coins during the war years. The 35% silver alloy used from late 1942 through 1945 gave these nickels a distinctive color and the large mintmark above Monticello's dome. Die markers UVC-743 and DMR-017 identify this specific die, and the obverse listing as DDO-003 means a thorough examination should include both sides. Medium spread represents a clearly visible secondary image under standard magnification, stronger than the light or very light categories. The left-to-right progressive increase across UNUM and OF AMERICA spans a significant portion of the upper reverse legend, making this one of the more visually accessible DDR varieties for the 1943-S wartime nickel. Locating confirmed dual-variety specimens requires patience, as both the obverse and reverse diagnostics must be verified independently.
