1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1943 1-cent WDDO-009, this doubled die obverse on a 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent is identified by an extra eyelid visible above the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. Obverse die markers include strong die scratches on the center of the collar just below the neck, a die crack running WSW to ENE through the upper forehead, and a die crack across the base of the bust. The reverse of this variety is itself a strong doubled die, listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1943 1-cent WDDR-004, making specimens potential two-variety coins. Reverse markers include a die gouge to the right of the P in PLURIBUS, a die scratch running ENE from the upper E of AMERICA to the lower A of STATES, and a short nearly vertical die scratch below the left side of the O in ONE. The 1943 Lincoln Cent was struck on zinc-coated steel planchets — the only year this wartime composition was used — making die varieties from this date instantly recognizable and heavily collected. The pairing of a doubled die obverse with a doubled die reverse on the same coin is uncommon and adds significant collector interest.
