The sheer volume of DDO varieties for the 1943 date -- with at least thirty-five and counting -- reflects the convergence of several factors that made this year uniquely productive for die variety generation. First, the Philadelphia Mint's output of 684.6 million steel cents required an enormous number of working dies, each created through the multi-impression hubbing process where misalignment could occur. Second, the zinc-coated steel planchet composition was new and unfamiliar to Mint personnel, potentially affecting die preparation parameters. Third, the wartime production urgency prioritized speed and volume over the painstaking quality control that might have caught and retired doubled dies before they entered service.
