1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

The 1943 DDO-001 Lincoln wheat cent, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse cross-referenced as FS-101 (18.97) in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherrypickers' Guide and cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1546 and DMR-002. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1943-101 (018.97). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it an extremely strong Class VI extra thickness on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and LIBERTY. Obverse stage A has many curving scratches through the hair and ear, a twisting scratch through the neck running mostly south to north, a heavy WSW-ENE scratch on the upper shoulder, an SSW-NNE scratch under the 4, a scratch running northwest from the upper left of the O in GOD to the rim, and two nearly parallel scratches southeast of the beard that start SSW and curve to the northeast. Stage B adds a crack from the back of the ear running WSW into the field. Reverse stage A has a very long scratch that starts at the second U of PLURIBUS, runs SSW through the N of ONE, bends south to pass between the E and N of CENT and stops between the D of UNITED and the first S of STATES, plus a SW-NE scratch across the lower left wheat stem. Reverse stage B adds a crack that leaves the rim over the L of PLURIBUS and runs southeast across the O of ONE, ending at the E of CENT. John A. Wexler submitted stage A and Brian Allen stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-VI and Coppercoins as 1943P-1DO-001, and Wexler notes that it appeared in the team's 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die. VarietyVista, which credits John A. Wexler with the report, describes extreme extra thickness on LIBERTY, the date and WE TRUST. Stage A has both sides early and a middle stage B is unconfirmed. Stage C, a late die state, shows a light crack on the forehead, a crack across the upper shoulder, two cracks across the lower lapel, and on the reverse a crack from the E of CENT running NNW to the rim through the O of ONE and the L of PLURIBUS.
