Description

Sharing northward displacement with RPM-001 from the same date, RPM-008 of the 1943-D Mercury Dime represents a different working die that independently produced a D/D repunching shifted above the primary. When two RPM varieties carry the same direction, the separation depends on the unique constellation of die markers — polish lines, scratches, clash impressions, and wear patterns — that make each die individually identifiable. RPM-008's separation from RPM-001 rests on these secondary diagnostics rather than direction itself. Eight RPM varieties deep, the 1943-D joins 1942-D as a premier collecting target for Mercury Dime RPM specialists. Denver's wartime production consumed dies at a pace that practically guaranteed a rich harvest, and the northward direction recurs with enough frequency to imply a slight systematic tendency in how technicians positioned their punches. Weinman's 1916 design continued in 90% silver at the standard 17.9mm, carrying Liberty's winged cap on the obverse and the fasces on the reverse.
