1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Wartime Mercury Dime production at the Denver Mint generated the 1943-D RPM-006, a repunched mintmark variety showing D/D East displacement where the initial Denver mintmark impression sits slightly east of the final position. Six documented RPMs for the 1943-D date reflects the heavy die consumption driven by wartime demand for circulating coinage — the United States' expanding military operations and home-front economy required enormous quantities of small change. Denver struck 71,949,000 dimes in 1943, a significant output that consumed many working dies, each requiring individual hand-punching of the D mintmark. The D/D East direction indicates the engraver's first punch landed to the right of the target location before a corrective second blow repositioned the mintmark. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury Dime design, with its fasces-and-olive-branch reverse, remained in production throughout World War II despite calls to modernize the coinage — the Mint was understandably reluctant to disrupt production processes during wartime when output volume was paramount. Mercury Dime RPM varieties occupy a well-established niche within the die variety collecting community, with dedicated reference guides and registry sets that track every documented mintmark variation across the series' thirty-year span. The 1943-D date is neither a key nor a common date in the Mercury series, sitting in the middle ground where mintage was sufficient to produce numerous die varieties but not so overwhelming as to make any single variety trivial. Examination under at least 10x magnification, focused tightly on the mintmark area near the base of the fasces, reveals the characteristic doubling that distinguishes RPM-006 from a normal strike.
