Fourth in the repunched mintmark census for the 1943-D Mercury dime, RPM-004 displays a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with secondary impressions displaced to the southeast in two successive shifts. Each displacement to the southeast means the earlier punch positions sat below and to the right of the final placement, creating a cascading trail of overlapping D impressions visible under magnification. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime reverse places the mintmark at the lower left beside the fasces, where the small D punch was positioned by hand using a steel letter punch and mallet — a manual process that demanded precision but frequently produced misalignments requiring correction. Denver struck approximately 71.95 million dimes in 1943, a wartime production year when the Mint operated at elevated capacity to supply military and civilian needs. The 1943 date holds special significance across multiple denominations: Lincoln cents were struck on zinc-coated steel, and nickel was rationed for military use, though dimes continued in their standard 90% silver composition throughout the war.
