Description

Third cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1943-D Mercury Dime, this variety exhibits D/D Southeast — the secondary mintmark impression displaced to the southeast of the primary punch position. The directional designation provides the key attribution diagnostic, indicating that the initial D punch landed southeast of its intended final position before correction. Southeast displacement creates visible doubling primarily on the upper-left portions of the D letterform, where the offset direction produces the greatest separation between first and second impressions. The 1943-D was struck during World War II at the Denver Mint on standard 90% silver planchets — unlike the cent denomination, which switched to zinc-coated steel that year, silver dimes maintained their traditional composition throughout the war. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design positions the mintmark on the reverse to the left of the fasces, and directional RPMs like this D/D Southeast provide collectors with visually confirmable variety characteristics checkable with a standard loupe. The Mercury Dime series' final years saw elevated production to meet wartime circulation demands, consuming numerous working dies and creating proportional opportunities for mintmark variety formation.
