Description

Victor David Brenner designed the Lincoln Cent obverse for the coin's 1909 debut, and his portrait of the sixteenth president has appeared on every cent since — through multiple reverse design changes, composition shifts, and the extraordinary wartime switch to steel in 1943. WDDO-025 from the Denver Mint applies Brenner's classic design to the unusual steel substrate, where the twenty-fifth cataloged doubled die obverse was identified. Brenner's fine portrait detail, particularly the hair above Lincoln's ear and the texture of his coat, provides subtle diagnostic areas for hub doubling detection beyond the more commonly examined inscriptions and date. On steel cents, the planchet hardness sometimes produces sharper design elements than on softer bronze, which can make certain types of doubling easier to detect in well-preserved specimens.
