Description

Among the wartime coinage experiments of the 1940s, the 1943 zinc-coated steel Lincoln Cent stands as perhaps the most distinctive โ€” a coin so different from its predecessors that it was often mistaken for a foreign coin or a dime in pocket change. The Denver Mint's contribution of over 217 million steel cents that year required numerous working dies, and the statistical likelihood of hub misalignment across such a large die population explains why more than thirty DDO varieties have been cataloged. WDDO-006 documents the sixth such obverse variety, where a working die received a secondary hub impression at a slight offset during the die sinking process. The resulting doubling is embedded permanently in the die and transfers to every coin struck from it, distinguishing true hub doubling from the flat, shelf-like displacement of machine doubling caused by loose die fit. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1943-D 1ยข WDDO-006.
