1942 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1942-S WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. An extra bar appears below the normal crossbar of LIBERTY's L. The obverse also has a repunched mint mark, which Wexler's RPM files list as 1942-S 1¢ WRPM-035. Stage A shows a strong dot left of the bottom of the date's 1; a dot SW of the 9's lower tip; a dot SE of the mint mark; light scratches running south from GOD's G; a series of mostly horizontal scratches through and left of the tops of WE's letters; a horizontal scratch under TRUST's US and another at the rim NE of its S; roughly vertical scratches on LIBERTY's BERT; a diagonal scratch through the lower edge of the hair curl; and a concentric scratch at the rim below the back of the bust. On Stage B the dots around the date and mint mark remain, the hair-curl scratch is still strong, the other scratches are weaker, and a dot appears above IN's I. On the reverse, Stage A has a series of light vertical scratches beside the upper left wheat tip, on its right; a vertical scratch between PLURIBUS' I and B; light vertical scratches on the top of CENT's T and through UNITED's U; and a crack on the right wheat's central grains, right of STATES' last S. Stage B keeps those markers and adds two gouges in the field under UNUM's second U and a crack running into the rim from the left wheat's central grains.
