1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011 / DDO-004

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-102 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (18.7) and tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-1521 and DMR-006, the 1942 Lincoln wheat cent DDO-004, which Wexler numbers WDDO-011, shows very strong spread on LIBERTY and the I of IN, plus very light spread on the back of Lincoln's shoulder. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1942-102 (018.7). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot at about 3:00, showing on the letters of IN and LIBERTY and on the back of Lincoln's coat. On the obverse several SSW-NNE scratches lie between GOD and WE; on the reverse a light WNW-ESE scratch runs above and between the N and second U of UNUM. Kevin Flynn submitted it, and Wexler notes that the earliest known report came from a coin that Delma K. Romines found. CONECA lists it as 4-O-V and Coppercoins as 1942P-1DO-004. VarietyVista credits Delma K. Romines with the report. Its stage A has both sides in an early die state, while stage B (middle) and stage C (late) are unconfirmed.
