1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Carrying the primary Fivaz-Stanton designation FS-101 for the date, DDO-002 of the 1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent stands as the most important doubled die obverse for the 1942 Philadelphia issue. Strong spread directed southwest affects the 19 of the date, the tie, eyelid, upper hair, and Lincoln's profile, creating a multi-element variety with broad visual impact. The southwest spread direction indicates the hub shifted down and to the left between impressions during die-sinking, displacing design elements in that direction on the secondary impression. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1519 and DMR-004, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B in mid-die state likewise awaits confirmation, and Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state. The 1942 Wheat Cent was struck at Philadelphia in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc during the final year before the wartime steel cent composition change of 1943. As the FS-101 variety, DDO-002 holds the premier position in the Cherry Picker's Guide for this date, making it the first variety collectors seek when examining 1942 cents.
