1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

Carrying the Fivaz-Stanton designation FS-101, DDO-002 of the 1942 Lincoln wheat cent, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse with strong spread to the southwest. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1942-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class IV southwest-offset spread, seen on the 19 in the date, on Lincoln's eye, bowtie, nose, lower lip and upper hair, and on part of the lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse a scratch runs northwest from the top of the head on the right-hand side of the D in GOD; a short scratch runs southwest from the center left of the E in WE; and a short scratch follows the rim in the gap between the S and T of TRUST. On the reverse a scratch runs south from the lower right of the E in ONE, a gouge sits over the N in UNITED, toward its left side, and an SSW-NNE scratch lies right of that N. Gary Wagnon submitted it, and Wexler notes that Harold R. Linnen first reported the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-IV and Coppercoins as 1942P-1DO-005. VarietyVista credits Harold R. Linnen with the report and describes strong southwest spread on the 19 of the date, the tie, the eyelid, the upper hair and the profile. Under its marker codes UVC-1519 and DMR-004, stage A (early) and stage B (middle) are unconfirmed, and in stage C both sides are in a late die state.
