1942 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

An extra eyelid appearing southwest of the main eyelid identifies WDDO-022, discovered on the 1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent during the early months of American involvement in World War II. Philadelphia struck 657,828,600 cents in 1942, the last full year of the standard bronze composition before the wartime steel cent transition of 1943, making this a transitional-era variety from one of the highest-mintage cent dates in the series. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch connecting the center of E and R in LIBERTY and die clash evidence present at the neck — the clash indicating this die also made direct contact with the opposing die during a planchet feed failure. Reverse die markers feature a die gouge dot positioned midway between the first U in UNUM and the upper right E in ONE, providing a precise attribution reference point.
