Description

Showing Class II distorted hub spread on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse is classified as Type I. Class II doubling originates from a deformation in the hub itself, meaning every working die from that hub carries the same doubled impression — unlike mechanical doubling, which is strike-related. The spread affects three distinct obverse elements, providing multiple areas for attribution. Obverse die markers include a die scratch left of the nose and ear, while the reverse shows a die scratch through the second O of MONTICELLO, a die gouge above and between FIVE and CENTS, and a die gouge resembling a dot at the upper right of the right arch. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1942 WDDO-008, this variety carries historical weight as a product of the final year before the wartime silver alloy was introduced. Beginning in late 1942, Jefferson Nickels were struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for military use, making the standard 1942-P a transitional issue.
