1942 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1942-D Washington quarter with very strong spread on the wreath, the arrows, the talons and the eagle's beak, and slight doubling below the second S in STATES. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-801; Wexler writes it FS-25-1942D-801 (016). VarietyVista gives the spread direction as south, Wexler as north. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes an extremely strong spread to the north on the eagle's beak, the whole wreath, the first T and the second S in STATES, beneath the arrows, and the undersides of the inner feathers where they approach the outer wing feathers. Its obverse markers are a crack heading east across the hair on top of the head, a crack across the bottom of the bust into the lower ribbon, a scratch heading ESE from the base of the T in LIBERTY, and a scratch heading SW from the base of the I in LIBERTY. On the reverse a crack descends the eagle's right wing. CONECA lists the die as 1-R-IV and Breen as #4316; Jim Lafferty submitted it. VarietyVista gives the reporter as unknown and tracks the die under UVC-0261 and DMR-012. Stage A has a light crack down the eagle's right wing in an early-middle state, a crack across the bust in a late state, and two cracks across the upper hair. In stage B the reverse is middle and the bust crack, late, extends into the queue behind and into the field above the 1 of the date. A late stage C is unconfirmed.
