Description

One of the most significant Mercury Dime varieties, the 1942-D DDO-001 displays a medium spread on the date that creates a dramatic 42/41 appearance — the underlying first impression shows the digits of 1941 beneath the final 1942 date, making this one of the rare hub-doubled overdate varieties in the twentieth-century U.S. series. The doubling extends to IN GOD WE TRUST, confirming that the entire obverse received a secondary hub impression. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-III and carrying the prestigious FS-101 and FS-502 designations, this is the top-ranked doubled die obverse for the date. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-155 with die marriage reference DMR-002, the reverse die is listed as RPM-004, meaning specimens also exhibit a repunched mint mark — making this a dual variety combining hub doubling with mint mark positioning on a single coin. The 1942-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint during Adolph A. Weinman's design's final years of production, and the 42/41 overdate effect is among the most visually dramatic doubled die phenomena in the entire Mercury Dime series. The overdate appearance results from the hub being impressed at a slightly different angle or position that left traces of the original 1941-dated hub visible beneath the final 1942 date — a manufacturing artifact that continues to command strong collector interest across all grade levels.
