1941 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1941 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse displays medium extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date — a substantial zone of involvement spanning the full obverse legend. The die marriage is documented with a complex die-stage history involving a reverse die change. UVC-1509/DMR-017 Stage A pairs the obverse in early-to-mid die state with a reverse showing die chips in the lower right wheat in very late die state, indicating the first reverse die was nearly exhausted. UVC-1510/DMR-018 Stage B shows the obverse at mid-die state paired with a newly introduced reverse die in early-to-mid state — confirming the Mint replaced the worn reverse while continuing to use the doubled obverse. Stage C reveals a die crack along the lower shoulder in late die state, with the replacement reverse at mid-die state. The mintmark is classified as MMS-002, a small mintmark variant. This progression from one reverse die to another within a single obverse die's working life offers collectors the opportunity to identify coins from distinct production phases, each with different reverse characteristics paired with the same doubled obverse.
