1941 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-019

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0506 and DMR-039, the 1941 Washington Silver Quarter DDR-019 exhibits strong spread directed north on the eagle's beak, the arrows clutched in the eagle's talons, and the laurel wreath encircling the reverse design. The strong classification indicates clearly visible doubling without magnification in optimal lighting conditions. The obverse of this die pair is listed as DDO-019, making this a combination variety where both obverse and reverse dies received hub doubling — a pairing that significantly enhances collector interest. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B is mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C represents late die state showing a die crack running down the eagle's right wing, a die crack from US of PLURIBUS extending to the wing under AMER of AMERICA, a die crack running east from the back of the eagle's head, and on the DDO-019 obverse, a die crack on the forehead and hair plus a die crack across the bust. John Flanagan's reverse eagle design for the Washington Quarter, struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter, was produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a 1941 mintage of 79,032,000 quarters. The northward spread on the beak, arrows, and wreath creates doubled outlines above these elements, best observed under 5x to 7x magnification. The extensive Stage C die cracking documents terminal die deterioration across both the obverse portrait and the reverse eagle.
