1941 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009

Description

Displaying strong spread to the north on the eagle's beak, arrows, and wreath, the 1941 DDR-009 is a Washington quarter doubled die reverse struck in .900 fine silver during the pre-war era. Cataloged as UVC-0175 with die marker reference DMR-025, the variety shows three documented die stages. Stage A, in early die state, features a large die gouge through AR of DOLLAR on the reverse with the obverse also in early die state, providing a dramatic pickup point for cherrypickers. Stage B advances both reverse and obverse to mid-die-state. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The northward spread on the beak, arrows, and wreath indicates a vertical hub displacement during die preparation that shifted these design elements upward relative to their intended positions. Silver Washington quarters of 1941 were produced in substantial quantities at Philadelphia as the nation prepared for wartime demands, and the strong spread on prominent design elements makes this variety more readily detectable than many subtle Washington quarter doubled dies.
