1941 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
A COMBO variety — the obverse is attributed DDO-011 and the reverse is independently listed as DDR-001 — DDO-011 for the 1941-P Washington Quarter (90% silver) shows a medium spread north on the last 1 of the date. Catalogued UVC-0163 and DMR-013, four die stages are documented for this variety. Stage A is the early die state. Stage B is the mid die state, with the reverse simultaneously listed as DDR-001 for that stage. Stage C (late-to-mid die state, LMDS) introduces a light die crack across the bust and a light die crack from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing. Stage D (late die state) carries a die crack from URIBUS to the wing, a die crack east from the eagle's head, a die crack from the wing through NIT of UNITED, and a die crack down the eagle's right wing to the leaves above Q of QUARTER. The 1941-P Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under John Flanagan's design. The four-stage die progression documents an unusually detailed record of this die's deterioration, culminating in the extensive network of Stage D cracks across the reverse eagle.
