1941 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Carrying the prestigious FS-101 designation in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this third doubled die obverse for the 1941 Washington Silver Quarter is among the most widely recognized DDOs in the pre-war quarter series. Strong spread on GOD WE and UST of TRUST creates bold, readily identifiable diagnostics that make this variety accessible to cherry-pickers working through rolls and bags of early Washington Quarters. Die markers tracked under UVC-0155 and DMR-005 document three stages with particularly informative late-die-state characteristics: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B in Mid-Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing multiple die cracks — a light die crack across the bust into the queue, a light die crack across the forehead and upper hair, and a die crack down the eagle's right wing to the rim, all at LDS. These Stage C die cracks serve as secondary diagnostics that confirm specimens from the die's final production phase. The 1941 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia with a mintage of approximately 79.0 million pieces, one of the larger pre-war production figures for the series. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, based on a Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, entered its tenth year of production in 1941. The FS-101 listing ensures this variety appears in the standard reference used by dealers, auction houses, and third-party grading services for attribution purposes.
