1941 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries the third cataloged doubled die reverse for 1941. Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling. Close Class II doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF AMERICA, and portions of the reverse lettering where a distorted hub transferred a secondary impression during the die-making process. Wexler Variety ID: 1941 WDDR-003. Die markers provide reliable attribution diagnostics: the obverse shows two short die gouges below the L of LIBERTY, while the reverse bears a short die gouge between the M and E of AMERICA. These fixed markers confirm the specific working die pair and distinguish this variety from WDDR-001 and WDDR-002. The 1941 date falls in the pre-war period of Jefferson Nickel production, when the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition was still in use — the wartime silver alloy would not arrive until partway through 1942. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in only its fourth year of production, was still a relatively fresh design when this doubled hub created its secondary impression.
