1941 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Among the rarest doubling mechanisms documented in the Jefferson Nickel series, this 1941 WDDR-001 features Class VI Distended Hub Doubling on the reverse, attributed by Brian A. Ribar. Class VI occurs when a hub expands or distends during the hubbing process, creating extra thickness that characteristically increases from one side of the design to the other. The spread is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with extra thickness increasing from left to right across the lettering, a hallmark diagnostic of the Class VI mechanism. Die gouges near the rim between the N of IN and the G of GOD on the obverse serve as the primary die markers for attribution. The progressive left-to-right intensification distinguishes Class VI from other doubling classes: Class I would show uniform spread, Class II would show rotational characteristics, and Class IV would show directional offset.
