1940 (S) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

1940-S WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-S Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a spread toward the center, appears on DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the right star, the upper leaves under OF, STATES OF AMERICA and the tops of the axe and fasces. The obverse is also a doubled die, listed by Wexler as 1940-S WDDO-006, with close doubling, spread toward the center, on the date and the designer's initials, and slight doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. Left of the T in LIBERTY, near its top, is a small die gouge. On the reverse, parallel NW-to-SE die scratches lie in the space from the E in ONE to the mint mark, and many north-south scratches appear across the reverse. Kevin Flynn submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
