1940 (S) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1940-S WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-S Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a Class II spread toward the center, appears on DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the right star, the leaves under OF, and STATES OF AMERICA. The obverse is also a doubled die, listed by Wexler as 1940-S WDDO-003, with a spread toward the center on the date. A die crack starts high on the throat, behind the chin, and runs north to the rim just left of the E in LIBERTY. Around the nose are die clash marks from the olive leaves, together with signs of heavy die abrading. On the reverse, a die gouge sits on the rim above the O in OF, and clash marks appear at the leaves under the AME of AMERICA and above the ON of ONE. John Bordner submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
