Description

DDO-002 on the 1940-S Jefferson nickel displays medium-strength doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST — a step above the more common light-class varieties, making the hub misalignment somewhat easier to detect under magnification. The San Francisco Mint struck approximately 39.6 million nickels in 1940, two years before the wartime silver composition would fundamentally change the series. This pre-war San Francisco issue uses the standard 75/25 copper-nickel composition and carries the small "S" mintmark at the traditional location on the reverse. Cataloged as UVC-663 with die marriage DMR-008 in the VarietyVista system, DDO-002 is the second of multiple doubled die obverses documented for this date. The medium spread designation indicates visible separation between the primary and secondary hub impressions that trained eyes can catch at 5x magnification, with the motto letters showing distinctly thickened or notched serifs that distinguish this from normal strike characteristics.
