1940 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
An early Jefferson Nickel variety from just the third year of Felix Schlag's design, this 1940 Philadelphia Mint issue exhibits Class II Distorted Hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS. Class II doubling occurs when the hub itself warps slightly during the hardening process, producing a distorted impression that transfers uniformly to every die made from that hub. The result is a subtle but consistent displacement across wide areas of the design, distinguishing it from the localized shifts seen in other doubling classes. This die is also paired with an obverse listed as 1940 5¢ WDDO-006, making it a dual-variety coin — a pairing that appeals to collectors seeking maximum die variety interest from a single specimen. Reverse die markers include heavy die scratches through UNITED, a die scratch between the first A and M of AMERICA, and a die scratch above and between E and R of AMERICA. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1940 WDDR-009.
