1940 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Struck during just the second full year of Jefferson Nickel production, this 1940 WDDR-007 doubled die reverse documents hub doubling on Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design when the series was still in its infancy. Schlag won a public design competition in 1938 to create the Jefferson Nickel, and early production years saw the Mint refining its die preparation processes for the new design. Hub doubling that occurred during die manufacture for this 1940 Philadelphia issue is preserved as visible doubling on the reverse design elements, carrying evidence of a misaligned hub impression into the finished working die.
