1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Lou Coles on the Reverse of 1938 type, this 1939 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse documents Class II distorted hub doubling on the transitional reverse used only during the series' first two years. The 1939 Jefferson exists with two distinct reverse types — the original 1938 reverse and the revised 1940 reverse — differing in Monticello's architectural details including step definition and window rendering. This listing applies to the Reverse of 1938, and WDDR-003 is cataloged separately for both designs because doubling was identified on specimens of each type. Very close Class II doubling appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, showing best on UNUM. Die markers aid attribution: the obverse carries a die dot between D of GOD and W of WE plus a die scratch through U of TRUST, while the reverse presents a die scratch above B of PLURIBUS near the rim and another from M to the first O of MONTICELLO. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1939 WDDR-003, this variety connects to the earliest chapter of the Jefferson Nickel when Felix Schlag's design was still being refined.
