1939 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017
Error
Description
Showing strong spread and extra thickness across all four major reverse legends — E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and MONTICELLO — this seventeenth documented doubled die reverse for the 1939 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel represents substantial doubling on a coin from only the second year of the series. The Jefferson Nickel debuted in 1938, and the 1939 parent coin uses the "Reverse of 1940" designation (RDV-002), which features straightened steps on Monticello rather than the curved steps of the original 1938 reverse. This design modification occurred during production, making "Reverse of 1940" coins from 1939 a recognized sub-variety in the series. Die markers include UVC-631 and DMR-027, with Stage A at Early-Mid Die State showing a strong die gouge connecting the O and F of OF as a prominent secondary diagnostic. Stage B at Mid-Die State remains unconfirmed, as does Stage C at Late Die State. Cataloged by VarietyVista, seventeen doubled die reverses documented for a single date reflects the depth of research into early Jefferson Nickel die varieties, driven by the accessibility and affordability of these coins for variety collectors.
